1. Our Commitment to Responsible Gambling

Gambling at Quorvian Estate is designed as a leisure activity — one element of the broader hospitality experience we offer at our Queenstown property. We recognise that, for a small number of people, gambling can become problematic. We take that possibility seriously and have put in place a range of measures to help every guest maintain control of their play.

Our approach is grounded in four principles:

  • Choice — gambling at our casino is entirely optional and is never a condition of your stay or enjoyment of the estate.
  • Control — we provide practical tools so that you can set and respect your own limits.
  • Awareness — we make information about the odds, the nature of chance and the signs of problem gambling openly available.
  • Support — we connect guests and their families with appropriate assistance whenever it is needed.

2. Adult-Only Access to the Casino

Entry to the Quorvian Estate casino is restricted to persons aged 18 years and over. This requirement applies at all times, regardless of whether a guest intends to gamble, and regardless of whether they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

2.1 Age Verification

All guests who appear to casino staff to be under the age of 25 may be asked to produce valid photographic identification before entry is permitted. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • A current New Zealand or overseas passport
  • A current New Zealand driver licence
  • A current New Zealand or overseas photo identification card issued by a recognised government authority

Quorvian Estate reserves the right to refuse entry to any person who cannot demonstrate that they meet the minimum age requirement. Guests who gain access to the casino by misrepresenting their age are acting in breach of New Zealand law and may be asked to leave the property.

2.2 Minors in the Wider Property

Children and young people under the age of 18 are welcome in many areas of Quorvian Estate, but must not enter, pass through or loiter in the casino area. Parents and accompanying adults are responsible for ensuring that minors in their care do not access the casino floor.

3. Gambling Is Optional

The casino at Quorvian Estate is one of many leisure facilities available to guests. You are under no obligation to gamble during your stay, and choosing not to gamble will have no effect on any other aspect of your experience with us. Our team will never encourage guests to gamble beyond their own wishes.

If you visit the casino, please approach play as you would any other entertainment expenditure — set a budget in advance, treat any winnings as a bonus rather than an expectation, and leave when you have reached your own time or spending limit.

4. Understanding the Nature of Gambling

Before you play, it is worth keeping the following in mind:

  • All casino games are governed by chance. Outcomes cannot be predicted, controlled or influenced by skill alone.
  • The mathematical design of casino games means that, over time, the house retains an advantage. Winning is never guaranteed.
  • Chasing losses — continuing to gamble in an attempt to recover money already lost — is a recognised pattern of risky play and rarely results in recovery of those losses.
  • Gambling should never be seen as a way to generate income, settle debts or resolve financial difficulty.
  • Past results have no bearing on future outcomes. A previous win or loss does not make the next outcome more or less likely.

5. Setting Your Own Limits

One of the most effective ways to keep gambling enjoyable is to decide in advance how much time and money you are willing to spend, and then to stick to those decisions.

5.1 Spending Limits

We encourage every guest to set a personal spending limit before entering the casino. A spending limit is the maximum amount you are comfortable losing during a single session or across your stay. When you reach that limit, your session is over — regardless of how the play has gone.

Practical steps to manage your spending:

  • Bring only the cash or card funds you are willing to lose, and leave other payment methods secured in your room.
  • Do not increase your bets in response to losses.
  • Avoid borrowing money from other guests or using credit to fund gambling.
  • Consider pre-committing to a fixed amount before you enter the casino floor.

5.2 Time Limits

Time limits are as important as spending limits. Lengthy play sessions can impair judgement and lead to decisions you would not otherwise make. We recommend:

  • Deciding on a maximum session length before you begin play.
  • Using a watch, phone or the clocks visible on the casino floor to track time.
  • Taking regular breaks — stepping outside, having a meal or engaging in another activity — before returning if you choose to.
  • Avoiding late-night or early-morning play when tiredness is a factor.

5.3 Summary of Limit Approaches

Limit Type What It Covers Practical Tip
Spending limit Maximum amount you are prepared to lose in a session or stay Decide before entering; carry only that amount
Time limit Maximum duration of a single play session Set an alarm or ask staff to remind you
Win limit A point at which you stop playing after a win Bank winnings and walk away before risking them
Loss limit A point at which you stop playing after cumulative losses Treat reaching this limit as the end of the session

6. Recognising Warning Signs

Gambling becomes a concern when it is no longer something you choose freely and enjoy, but something that feels compulsive, disruptive or difficult to stop. The following patterns may indicate that gambling is having a harmful effect on your life or the life of someone you care about. This list is provided for awareness only, not as a diagnostic tool.

  • Spending more money or more time gambling than you had originally intended.
  • Continuing to gamble after you have decided to stop.
  • Repeatedly returning to gamble in order to win back money that has been lost.
  • Feeling restless, irritable or preoccupied when not gambling.
  • Keeping gambling habits secret from family, friends or colleagues.
  • Using money set aside for household expenses, bills or savings to fund gambling.
  • Borrowing money or selling possessions to continue gambling.
  • Neglecting work, study, family responsibilities or other interests because of gambling.
  • Gambling to escape stress, low mood, boredom or other difficulties.
  • Making repeated unsuccessful attempts to reduce or stop gambling.
  • Relationships with family or friends becoming strained as a result of gambling.

If any of these patterns feel familiar, we encourage you to speak with a trusted person in your life, approach our Guest Services team in confidence, or seek support from a professional organisation. Taking that step early makes a positive difference.

7. Taking a Break

Stepping away from the casino, even briefly, can help you regain perspective and make clearer decisions. If at any point you feel that your play is not going the way you had intended, or that you are not enjoying yourself, we encourage you to take a break.

A break can mean:

  • Leaving the casino floor and spending time in another area of the estate.
  • Speaking with a friend, family member or member of our team.
  • Returning to your room and reflecting on whether you wish to continue playing.
  • Ending your session for the day and returning on another occasion, if at all.

Our casino team members are trained to approach guests with sensitivity if they observe signs of distress or problematic play. If a team member speaks with you, please know that they are acting in good faith and with your wellbeing in mind.

8. Self-Exclusion at Quorvian Estate

If you feel that the best decision for you is to stop visiting the casino altogether for a period of time, Quorvian Estate operates a self-exclusion programme. Self-exclusion is a formal arrangement by which you ask us to refuse you entry to the casino for a defined period.

8.1 How Self-Exclusion Works

  • You request self-exclusion by speaking with a senior member of our Guest Services or Casino Management team.
  • You will be asked to provide a photograph and confirm your identity so that staff can recognise you and uphold the exclusion.
  • You choose a minimum exclusion period; we recommend a minimum of six months, and longer periods are available.
  • During the exclusion period, you will not be permitted to enter the casino. If you attend, you will be asked to leave.
  • Any complimentary or promotional material related to casino activities will be withdrawn for the duration of the exclusion.

8.2 Lifting a Self-Exclusion

Self-exclusion cannot be lifted before the agreed period has expired. At the end of the exclusion period, reinstatement of access is not automatic — you must make an active request to Casino Management. We will take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that reinstatement is appropriate before agreeing to it.

8.3 Requesting Self-Exclusion

To request self-exclusion, or to ask questions about the process in confidence, please contact our team at:

Email: info@quorvianestateinn.com

All self-exclusion requests are handled with complete discretion. Your decision to self-exclude will not be shared with any third party except where required by New Zealand law.

9. Support from Trusted Contacts

If you are concerned about someone else's gambling — a partner, family member or close friend — there are constructive steps you can take.

  • Open a conversation — Raising the topic with someone you care about, calmly and without blame, can be the most important step. Choose a quiet moment, express your concern using personal observations rather than accusations, and listen to their response.
  • Offer practical support — If the person is willing, you can offer to accompany them when they seek help, assist them in setting limits or managing finances, or simply make yourself available to talk.
  • Set your own boundaries — Looking after someone affected by problem gambling can be demanding. It is important to recognise the limits of what you can do and to seek support for yourself as well.
  • Contact our team — If you believe that a guest at our property is experiencing significant harm as a result of gambling, you are welcome to speak with our Casino Management or Guest Services team in confidence. While we are bound by our duty to guests, we take all such concerns seriously.

Quorvian Estate staff are not counsellors, and we will not attempt to intervene in private relationships. However, we can listen, provide information and, where appropriate, facilitate contact with external support resources.

10. Local Responsible Gambling Resources

New Zealand has a number of public authorities and community organisations whose role includes providing support, guidance and assistance to people affected by problem gambling. These bodies operate independently of Quorvian Estate and are funded at a national and regional level.

We encourage anyone who is concerned about their own gambling or that of a person they care for to seek out the support services that are available to them in New Zealand. These services provide:

  • Confidential support and guidance for individuals affected by problem gambling
  • Assistance for family members and close contacts of people experiencing gambling harm
  • Information about problem gambling and how to access further help
  • Referral pathways to specialist support where needed

Details of publicly available support services can be obtained through New Zealand government information channels, your local community health service or by asking a member of our Guest Services team, who will assist you in identifying the most appropriate local resource for your situation.

Quorvian Estate fully supports the framework for minimising gambling harm that applies in New Zealand and cooperates with public agencies exercising statutory functions in this area. If you wish to make a formal complaint or enquiry about our gambling environment, you may also contact the relevant New Zealand public authority responsible for the oversight of casino operations.

11. Our Staff and Their Role

All Quorvian Estate casino staff receive responsible gambling training as part of their induction and on an ongoing basis. Their training covers:

  • Recognising the behavioural signs that may indicate a guest is experiencing gambling harm
  • Approaching guests sensitively and without judgement
  • Understanding and applying our self-exclusion procedures
  • Enforcing the minimum age requirement consistently and fairly
  • Directing guests to appropriate support information

Our staff are empowered to refuse service, to ask a guest to leave the casino floor or to escalate a concern to management whenever they consider it appropriate to do so. These decisions are made in the best interests of our guests and the integrity of our operation.

If you ever feel that a member of our casino team has acted inappropriately, or if you wish to provide feedback about our responsible gambling practices, please contact us at info@quorvianestateinn.com. All feedback is reviewed by senior management.

12. Key Reminders Before You Play

Principle What It Means in Practice
Gambling is entertainment Treat it as a leisure expense, not a source of income or a way to resolve financial difficulty.
Play within your means Only gamble with money you can afford to lose without affecting your financial obligations.
Set limits before you start Decide on a spending limit and a time limit, and commit to them before you enter the casino.
Do not chase losses If you have reached your limit, stop. Increasing bets to recover losses rarely works and often makes things worse.
Take breaks Regular breaks help you stay in control of your time and decisions.
Know that help is available If gambling stops being enjoyable, speak to our team or seek support from a local resource.
Minimum age is 18 No person under 18 may enter the casino for any reason.
